Sony Xperia XZ2: The Smartphone With Revamped Design and Powerful Features
In the Mobile World Congress this year Sony has unleashed its new pair of smartphones Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. Both seem to give the company a better grip on the smartphone market that the company is trying to find drastically for some time. Sony has not unveiled the price for both the phones and both are expected to release in the first week of April this year.
Sony Xperia XZ2 design
From the design of Sony mobiles, it appears that the company is trying to have a strong foothold with new designs low in the bezel. Sony has always created a distinction with flat top and bottom, but in spite of this, the distinction was far from a subject of admiration. The thick and clearly noticeable bezel of Sony smartphones is finally supposed to go and make way for a slimmed down device with the very low bezel. That is how Sony Xperia XZ2 really looks like.
Sony not only launched a new phone called Xperia XZ2 but also came with its own mini sibling called the Xperia XZ2 Compact. These two phones is a shift from the usual smartphone design Sony is known for. Most importantly, Sony finally offered fingerprint sensor to work in US market. But in spite of the efforts that looks to take the brand towards a positive direction, the new phones are still way behind the top flagships in terms of design. Unlike both Galaxy S9 and iPhone X, both phones offer quite a lot of bezels on top and bottom of the screen and look much flatter.
But in spite of the usual design shortcomings, many of us respect the solid performance and powerful specs that the brand is known for. If you let go such shortcomings both the phones sport a highly organic and stylish form that just looks pretty balanced in hands.
Another important value addition with the XZ2 has been its materials. On the rear side, the new Xperia offers backs covered with curved Gorilla Glass instead of the metallic built of the previous Xperia phones. This really gives the phone a glamorous feel and makes it real handy for the hand.
Sony Xperia XZ2 display
The display of the phone delivers a longer, 18:9 (or 2:1) aspect ratio while the screen size remains fairly pragmatic with 5.7-inch size. The fingerprint sensor of the phone has been positioned in the back of the device with new Xperia XZ2 instead of providing it with the power button at the side. After all, finally Sony found the right place for positioning its fingerprint sensor. In the Mobile World Congress this year several major brands came with their latest flagships with the same positioning of the fingerprint sensor.
Wireless charging feature
The glass cover for the rear side of XZ2 is useful for another reason, and it is the wireless charging capability that Sony introduced for the first time with this device. But remember, the XZ2 Compact doesn’t provide wireless charging feature.
Camera and imaging features
There is still one camera on the rear side of the phone and Sony probably ditched the idea of providing dual rear camera by rather providing a more powerful 19MP sensor. In spite of just sticking to one rear camera it can brush its soldier with top flagships with great image quality simply because of the phone’s Qualcomm’s Spectrum 280 image signal processor taking charge of image processing tasks.
There are more to say about the imaging and video shooting capabilities of XZ2. Sony already introduced super slo-mo for more than a year before and now it also offers video shooting at 4K HDR resolution. To add more value to this, Sony promises that its HDR phone screen can even upscale the HDR content giving it the same look and feel as the native HDR.
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
Finally, we need to spare a few words for the mini version Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact. Sony has always insisted that the smaller phones should deliver the same level of specs and quality as their big counterparts. Naturally, for the livers of small form factor in smartphone XZ2 Compact offers almost the same array of specs.
Final note
Sony may not be the considered as one of the leading players in the smartphone landscape but the company thanks to its dominance across many other tech niches still has quite a follower base and so, it is always looked upon with expectant gazes. The XZ2 offers several new elements that Sony is working upon for quite some time. From a more sophisticated design and built to better processor power and performance to top notch camera and imaging features, this new Sony phone seems to be all set to hold its head high over the repetitive low key flagships that are flooding the market.
