Mi 8 – Xiaomi’s Latest Flagship Phone with a Notch
Xiaomi is celebrating its 8th anniversary this year. At the anniversary celebration of the company in Shenzen, China, the Xiaomi Mi 8 was unveiled by the founder Lei Jun. The new flagship of the Chinese internet company was compared to not just the Apple iPhone X, but also the Huawei P20 Pro. At the event, Lei Jun stated clearly that its contest to deliver the best flagship smartphone is not just with Apple but also with Huawei.
First phone with a notch
Xiaomi’s new Mi 8 is the company’s first phone with a notch. The Mi 8 features a 6.21-inch OLED screen from Samsung. It wraps around a pretty large notch which fits a 20-megapixel selfie camera. This anniversary special smartphone from the company comes with advanced facial recognition system very similar to the Apple iPhone X.
Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with a four-way curved glass panel with an aluminium frame. The phone is supported and run by Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 845 processor. The Mi 8 features a new 12-megapixel dual camera setup on the rear which scores 105 on DxOMark. Xiaomi also claims that Mi 8 is going to be the first phone ever to use dual-frequency GPS. It is there is to provide you with a better and more accurate location data.
The Explorer edition
Xiaomi has always been pretty impressive with all its flagship smartphones over the years, considering their price. This time the company is going all out with the launch of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The Explorer Edition features an in-display fingerprint sensor. This is the first ever that a fingerprint sensor in a phone uses pressure sensitivity. Xiaomi also said that the Explorer Edition will also be the first ever Android phone that will make use of 3D face recognition technology. Also, similar to the iPhone X’s Face ID, there is a feature equivalent to the Animoji on the smartphone.
The Explorer Edition of the Xiaomi Mi 8 looks very impressive. Xiaomi went an extra mile forward and has shown alleged real parts on the logic board. Also, there are such fine details on this transparent design that it adds up to the entire look. Using a transparent design for a smartphone is not a new thing at all. In the past, HTC had tried a very similar design. But it is all about how you handle the transparent design and what you choose to show and reveal. The transparent design of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is simply mesmerising.
Mi 8 SE
Another addition to the Mi 8 line-up is the Mi 8 SE. The Mi 8 SE is a much smaller, a bit slower, and a cheaper version of the Mi 8. The Mi 8 SE will be the first phone to use Qualcomm’s brand new mid-range Snapdragon 710 processor. It has a 5.88-inch OLED screen. The Snapdragon 710 processor is said to help in saving about 30% of power consumption over the previous processor. It offers around 20% greater performance. This feature can help Mi 8 SE secure a strong position in the Chinese market. There it will be competing with several expensive phones like Vivo and Oppo.
Coming in June
The Xiaomi Mi 8 features a Full HD+ Samsung Super AMOLED display. The screen comes with an 88.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. The screen is crafted with metal and glass and has a rounded design. Because of the display notch on the Mi 8, the aspect ratio of the display will now be 18.7:9. There is also a Studio Lighting Mode on the Mi 8 which works pretty much similar to the Portrait lighting modes of Apple’s iPhone 8 and X. The Mi 8 is priced at 2,699 yuan, while the Explorer Edition costs 3,699 yuan. The Mi 8 SE is priced at 1,799 yuan. The Mi 8 will be made available in China starting from 5th June. The Mi 8 SE will follow at 8th June, while the Explorer Edition will come out at a later date.
